Life Resources :: Take 100% Responsibility

Take 100% Responsibility

Posted by admin on July 16, 2013

I’m often struck by how often people (including me at times) wait for other people, things, and situations to make them happy.  I do this sometimes.  I fall into that mindset that if this would happy, then…or if someone did this or didn’t do this behavior, then…I’d be happy.

I decided in 2009 to take 100% responsibility for my life.  Jack Canfield, co-author of The Success Principles and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, challenged me to take 100% responsibility for my life.  This involved no more blaming, complaining, and excuse making.  This is a daunting task!  Let me tell you, when Jack suggested I take 100% responsibility for my life, I hung my head.  It was too much!  I was not ready to take 100% responsibility for everything in my life.  Are you kidding me??  Furthermore, I resisted this idea.  How could I be 100% responsible for everything?  Other people are responsible too, aren’t they?

In The Success Principles, Jack states, “If you want to be successful, you have to take 100% responsibility for everything that you experience in your life.  This includes the level of your achievements, the results you produce, the quality of your relationships, the state of your health and physical fitness, your income, your debt, your feelings – everything!”

Later, Jack also writes, “The day you change your responses is the day your life will begin to get better!”  If you want something different, you will have to do something different.  You’ve likely heard the definition for insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  You are in charge of your thoughts and your feelings.  You decide (although sometimes we may not make a conscious decision) how you think and how you feel.  No one else decides that for you.  Let me say that again, no one else decides that for you.  YOU decide.  YOU choose how you will think and how you will feel.

I love the Eleanor Roosevelt quote, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”  Choose to no longer give that consent.  Choose to create the abundant, wonderful life God has offered to you.  Begin by taking even 5% more responsibility for your happiness, your health, your wealth, your relationships.  If you were to take 5% more responsibility for your health today, what would you do?  If you were to take 5% more responsibility for your happiness today, what would you do?  If you were to take 5% more responsibility for your financial future today, what would you do?

It sounds simple and conceptually it is quite simple.  Acting on these decisions, daily, thousands of times throughout the day actually, is where the true test lies.  You don’t have to be perfect.  You don’t have to begin with 100% responsibility for your entire life.  You can begin with 5% more responsibility, daily decisions, choices you make to create the life you desire.
