Life Resources :: The "Magic" Number

The "Magic" Number

Water boils at 212 degrees, right?  We all learned that at some point in school.  Yet, as we are living our daily lives, we may lose sight of this fact.  Sometimes just as we are about to reap the benefits of our labors, we throw in the towel.  We decide it (whatever it may be) is just too much work and has taken too long to come to fruition.  Or, we may decide we are no longer deserving of “it”.

The difficulty sometimes with our goals is that sometimes we don’t know where we are on the thermometer.  We’re not sure if we’re at 160 degrees or 211 degrees.  Some of us are not even sure we’re reading the right thermometer!  Perhaps yours feels more like you’re reading a Celsius thermometer.

Knowing where we are on the thermometer requires developing measurable steps we can take towards our goals.  If our goal represents 212 degrees on the thermometer, what does that look like?  How will we know when we’ve reached the 100 degree mark?  How will we know when we’ve reached the 150 degree mark?  How will we know when we’re just approaching 211 degrees and about to achieve our big breakthrough?  How are you measuring your progress?

If your only way of measuring progress is the attainment of 212 degrees, how will you maintain your commitment, passion, and focus?  Identifying key steps along the way to gauge your progress is critical.  Celebrating the achievement of those key steps is essential.  Reminding ourselves of why we set out on our journey can also be a key step in the process.   Evaluate your progress based on your starting point, not on others’ starting points or perceptions of your progress.

Here’s to your success!
