Choose Who You Want to Be

Many of us go through our day wishing for things we do not have, responding to events we face in our lives, and reacting to life.  We live lives that are not altogether unpleasant and actually seem good.  We settle for a mediocrity that keeps us safe and doesn’t challenge who we are.

Perhaps occasionally we get a little nudge to change that, which we quietly lock away because life is pretty good.  But what if life could be better?  What if you could have a little more of what you would like?  What if you could be a little more of who you would like to be?  What if…?

A couple of weeks ago, I was struggling.  Through some quiet reflection, I realized the reason I was struggling.  The mental image was of me sitting in a shallow part of the ocean, with wave after wave washing over me, shifting me, changing how I was sitting, challenging me to continue to sit up, pushing me back and pulling me forward as the waves came, splashing salt water in my face, shifting the sand beneath me.  I felt completely at the mercy of those waves. I found myself reacting to life’s challenges in ways I didn’t want to.

So, I made a decision. Really, though, I re-committed to a decision I previously had made.  I decided I was going to be who I wanted to be and conduct myself the way I wanted to be.  I decided how I wanted to show up in this world and the behaviors that were consistent with who I wanted to be.  I no longer wanted to just react to life.  I wanted to create my life again.  I wanted to stand up in the sand, walk along the beach, enjoy the salty air, and appreciate my life and my ability to change.  I didn’t need to wait for someone else to change.  I didn’t need to wait for circumstances to be perfect.  My ability to change others does not exist; I can influence but I cannot change.  I decided to take back my life and not wait for things over which I have no control.  I don’t have to wait to be happy.  I create my own happiness with the help of God.  I create my own peace with the help of God.  “I can do all through Christ who strengthens me.”

Write a list of the descriptors you would like to apply to you.  Then, decide to BE that person.  Live your life as if you ARE that person.

May you experience more joy, happiness, and abundance!
