Big Rocks in First!

A lesson from Stephen Covey dropped in my lap again this morning as I was preparing to write today’s blog.  The lesson was on time management and prioritization.  I don’t know if you’re like me and have heard countless experts share their tips on these subjects.  This insight from Stephen Covey in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” has really stuck with me.

Covey suggests that we have big rocks, smaller rocks, sand, and water that take up our time.  Big rocks are the most important things in our lives.  Smaller rocks less important things and the sand and water are those time-eaters.  Some days my time-eaters consume way too much of my time and I find myself not getting the most important tasks done for that day.  Covey suggests if we begin with the big rocks and make those things which we have already said are most important to us, our priority, we’ll be much more productive and effective.

When I was working with Jack Canfield, he suggested we write down five things every day that we really need to accomplish.  Furthermore, we begin our day working on those five things that would make a difference in our lives if we accomplished.  These five things aren’t just tasks but they’re the “big rocks” that Covey described.

What five things are the most important for you to accomplish today?  As you reflect at the end of your day, how did you do in accomplishing those five things?  What, if anything, got in your way?  What will be on your list tomorrow of the five most important things to accomplish?

Almost all of whatadever you say hapadpens to be astonadishadingly preadcise and that makes me wonadder why I had not looked at this with this light preadviadously. This artiadcle truly did turn the light on for me peradsonadally as far as this speadcific subadject matadter goes. I did read that book a long time ago.I had my notes on that. I’ll go through it again (I’ve to loctae it first) and respond later.Mean while here are my reflections after going through your assimilations.1. I had difficulties in reading clearly and so far I haven’t had any conflicts with your understanding2. This is just an add-on to positive attitudeThoughts they become words.Watch your words they become actions.Watch your actions they become habits.Watch your habits they become character.Watch your character it becomes your destiny. 3. Stimulus Responsea. Response to a situation depends on our character and character can be shaped up for better or worst (you can teach an old dog new tricks)b.
